If you want to learn to debate without all the jargon (and without losing your soul), Upside Down Debate is for you. You'll be introduced to debate by learning how to listen before you speak, construct a persuasive argument (or “case”) for change, connect with your audience, draw on centuries-old wisdom from classical rhetoric, and engage thoughtfully with your opponents.

Experienced coaches of both competitive debaters and business clients, Isaiah and Betsy McPeak bring a wealth of debate war stories and real life anecdotes that make Upside Down Debate anything but theoretical. Whether you're a novice, a veteran debater, or a curious outsider to the debate world, you will grasp what it means to master the art of persuasion with one’s honor intact.

Why “Upside Down?” Communicators often speak from a self-focused perspective--I want to sound good, feel in charge, and get what I want. But this misplaced focus is often the cause of communication breakdowns. Upside Down communication is all about putting your audience first by listening well, thinking well, and only then, speaking well in a disciplined way.

You will learn

“The reader will learn not only the building blocks of debate, but more importantly how to debate with integrity and an eye on persuading others in a manner that will serve beyond high school forensics, into college classes, board rooms and even personal relationships.” – TJ Harding, champion debate coach

Upside Down Debate does more than just teach you how to debate. It makes the all-too-often overlooked connection between academic debate and real life.” – Chris Jeub, Founder and CEO of TrainingMinds.org; educator, author, speaker

Upside Down Debate a deeper why to persuasion edition by Betsy McPeak Isaiah McPeak Reference eBooks

Really enjoyed this Upside Down Debate and learned a lot about communicating. I love the idea of stasis and shared assumptions. Like we need to first decide what it is we are discussing before we can have the discussion so we can stay on the same page. Debate should be a mandatory class in school growing up so more people learn better communication skills. Thanks for improving mine Upside Down Debate! Thank you!

Upside Down Debate a deeper why to persuasion edition by Betsy McPeak Isaiah McPeak Reference eBooks Reviews

In Upside Down Debate, Isaiah & Betsy McPeak have written a refreshing approach to learning debate. The book is designed to present the skill of debate as a lifelong skill, as opposed to one only for high school competition with the goal of winning a trophy. While winning can be one of the benefits of learning to be an excellent debater, these authors stress the need for taking good argumentation and rhetoric into the workplace and home for the long haul. The examples from Isaiah’s debate competitions in high school and college are entertaining and illustrate how using uncharitable tactics or trying to manipulate others is ineffective.

Isaiah says, “What has debate done for us? It has taught us to make better decisions. As corny as it sounds, debate has made us into better people in business, in self-education, in classrooms, in relationships, as parents, and as participants in any process.”

As a debate coach and a homeschool parent, I find this approach to have its priorities and values in order, and if my kids win a trophy along the way, I will be the first to stand up and cheer. If not, I am still cheering, because they will have a far better chance at success in the game of life.

The philosophies in this book changed my debate style, my coaching technique, and touched every part of my life. The author has poured into many lives, living and teaching so many young people the book's content personally. I will never be the same because of it.

FOR STUDENTS debating to the next level does not exist in raw technique. It stems from your heart and state of your mind. Isaiah and Betsy embody sharpness in both of these areas, as well as illustrate how to get there. You'll learn how to differentiate yourself by eliminating pointless parts of the game. You'll learn how to rise above mindless argumentation & philosophies. You'll learn how to become an effective communicator vs. an expert performer. This book teaches you how to coach yourself. Nothing else has revolutionized my debate/coaching style so vividly.

FOR PARENTS You want your children to become great debaters, but is that all? This book will shape them into incredible debaters, but not because it teaches them cheap tricks & short cuts. It addresses character, mind, heart, performance, and everything in between. Handing this book to your students is not a fast-track to a national championship title. It's a focused approach to deeper debating, wisdom, and powerful, dynamic, argumentation. It will blow your mind. I encourage you to read this yourself. You will be challenged and grown.

FOR COACHES Isaiah is the best debate coach I know. This book isn't just for debaters - it is also for the people who are shaping them. Your coaching technique will shift to a more student-focused, student-led, and philosophy-centered style. It's a phenomenal resource. Certainly not below your level. Not just "debate how to". It's "why debate", "behind debate", "beneath debate", "because debate", and so much else. The stuff you need to know how to truly coach skill vs. host a study session.

I wish I could write a review that simply did this book justice. See for yourself.
The ideas contained within Upside-Down Debate will change your worldview. I've known the author for several years and have had adequate time to mull through the material covered here...there is NOT a part of your life that this won't positively affect.

This is, first and foremost, a book for people who debate or wish to learn how. It does a phenomenal, straightforward job. Most debate veterans you ask will describe a disconnect in-round between the judge/outside audience and debaters themselves. This disconnect is caused by debaters who speak a technical, non-intuitive jargon that most people are not educated in (nor should they be expected to be). In response, Upside-Down approaches debate from a common sense, real world perspective that is palatable to everyone. Experienced speakers and newbies alike will benefit from this book.

But more generally-speaking, Upside-Down Debate encourages the highest form of critical thinking. While many books, coaches, and authors utilize rhetoric and persuasion to win people over, Isaiah bases his argumentation on the premise that the speaker ought to do his best to communicate *truth* to the listener by removing any ego-related motives. The goal, then, is not to "win rounds"; it is to be a vessel of truth in topic areas that are traditionally cloudy by shining the light of virtues, impartial fact, and reason upon them.

Selfless people are an encouraging breath of fresh air in a selfish world. Upside-Down Debate outlines the path for those who wish to better themselves and help others.
