1898 What looks like an easy job turns into a life-threatening nightmare as Montmorency and his friends pursue anarchists across Europe to the USA. Science, medicine and opera are entangled in his fight to save lives. But no one is safe in Montmorency's world. “A thumping good story told with consummate skill. There's pace, action, excitement and humour, with characters you really care about.” Philip Ardagh, The Guardian This is the third book in the Montmorency series.

It is with significant sadness that I write a less than glowing review for "Assassins". I have enjoyed the quaint plot, the characterisations and certainly love the period in which they are set - but I cannot get past the regular MISTAKES in the text of the Kindle Edition. As a child I thought I was (compared to others) a slow reader, as an adult I now know its because I actually read every word, thus it is most disconcerting to be slapped in the face by mis-spelled words that I know are the result of publishers cutting corners. Computer editing is fast and cheap and the errors it makes are never ending. For example, in a letter to Lord Fox-Selwyn, anthropological collector Lord Astleman wrote that he thought the items were 'lost forever' (in the text it is written as LAST FOR EVER) he then congratulates the team on the selection of Florence as first "PORT of call" which ends up as PART of call. I could list others, but some will already think me pedantic. What a shame!!

Montmorency and the Assassins Eleanor Updale 9781482657692 Books Reviews
great reading for all ages - I could not put it down - I have read the entire series and wished the story would continue
An excellent series. The historical info is fascinating, not a whole lot written about during the Victorian times when a lot was changing. I recommend the whole series. My son and daughter both loved these books and came away with a fresh look on history lessons! Eleanor Updale is impressive. The story grips you early and doesn't let up past the end.
I recommend for kids 10yrs and up.... and adults
Amazing book, wonderful author, great price and fast shipping? Oh yes! Would get these for young readers, old readers and anyone in between. Simple reads but still very enjoyable and intriguing.
I'm never a re-reader, but I LOVE this series. I read them in high school, but never forgot them. Bought them to refresh before I read the last of the series, and were just as good the second time. My nephew, who is 10, also loves them. Very interesting stories, with a little history mixed in.
Nice
Just doesn't have the powerful message of the first book and, at the end, takes a shocking turn not appropriate for a youth fiction book.
Got this (3rd) installment of the great Montmorency series and was very pleased to see the same high quality of writing, thrills and plot development I've become accustomed to with Ms. Updale's other Montmorency books. And having it set in the Gilded Age/right before makes it even more compelling - the ## of interesting period/historical youth fiction books is finally getting some quality installments! Good job, Eleanor and will be looking forward to reading your other series.
