A Gospel Primer Learning to See the Glories of God Love (Audible Audio Edition) Milton Vincent Conrad Bear christianaudiocom Books Reviews
This little book packs a powerful message which will encourage and help every believer. The Gospel is not just for yesterday but for today-for every hour, minute, and second of one’s life. This book is a treasure and I highly recommend it.
I will be brief in my review. A Gospel Primer by Milton Vincent is one of those simplistic and yet utterly transformative works that every follower of Christ should read and return to again, and again, and again, until they're overflowing with the Gospel. Through multiple seasons of life, I have fallen into the intellectual snare of heady doctrine and nuanced exegesis where the bread and life of the Gospel inevitably and unintentionally becomes secondary. If this is you or you're a more recent sinner saved by God's decreed grace (really anywhere in your walk with Christ), then this is the book for you. I will be making it a habit to return to Milton's work when ever I become imbalanced in my personal study.
This book has been a fantastic eye opener to the importance of the gospel of Christ in the believer's life. The gospel is not a step that is checked off and then left behind. It is the key to true joy and understanding of how to live the Christian life. Read it, meditate on gospel everyday and you will never be the same again.
Christians talk about the Gospel (of Jesus Christ) but we neglect to review it for ourselves. Many writers through the centuries have mentioned the need to 'preach the Gospel to myself,' but I did not know that. And, more importantly, the Apostle Paul says the same thing in the first chapter of his letter to the Romans he acknowledges they are Christians but goes on to say that he longs to preach the Gospel to them!
Reviewing the Gospel helps us grow in Christ (after we believe), and is really God's only way of sanctifying us (making us more like Christ, more like we are supposed to be). Get this. Read it. Then re-read it regularly.
Milton Vincent has put together a summary of the Gospel in both prose and poetry and footnoted every thought back to scripture (the Bible). It is an excellent tool!
This book is an essential tool for the refreshment of your soul. Making this part of your daily spiritual disciplines and being attentive to the scriptures that are referenced will transform the way you appreciate the gospel and you will see the gospel transform your life in the process of sanctification. Ultimately you will have a greater affection for God and have a greater understanding of God’s affection for you.
I just read it this week and found it very helpful. This short book (97 pages) is divided into four parts.
Part 1 is a series of thirty-one meditations on "Reasons to Rehearse the Gospel Daily." These Scripture-laden reflections will nourish your soul and thrill your heart with the wonders of God's grace.
Part 2 is "A Gospel Narrative Prose Version." This is a short summary of the message of the gospel, broken down into four parts (The Glory of God; My Sin Against God; God's Work on My Behalf; My Salvation) and forty-one "verses."
Part 3,"A Gospel Narrative Poetic Version," is the summary of the gospel in the form of poetry.
Part 4, "Surprised by the Gospel" explains the story behind the book - how a performance-driven pastor discovered the freedom and joy of justification by faith alone.
Here's an excerpt from Part 1 of the book. This is one of the thirty-one reasons to rehearse the gospel daily.
"The gospel encourages me to rest in my righteous standing with God, a standing which Christ Himself has accomplished and always maintains for me. I never have to do a moment's labor to gain or maintain my justified status before God! Freed from the burden of such a task, I now can put my energies into enjoying God, pursuing holiness, and ministering God's amazing grace to others.
"The gospel also reminds me that my righteous standing with God always holds firm regardless of my performance, because my standing is based solely on the work of Jesus and not mine. On my worst days of sin and failure, the gospel encourages me with God's unrelenting grace toward me. On my best days of victory and usefulness, the gospel keeps me relating to God solely on the basis of Jesus' righteousness and not mine."
Each of these meditations are written in the first person like this. Just reading them really is an exercise in preaching the gospel to oneself.
How did I come across this book? I read Andy Naselli's review in Themelios. It was so positive that I ordered it immediately. I'm glad I did. Take it and read.
This is by far one of the most helpful and encouraging books I've ever read! The first section works fantastic as a little daily devotional. I don't know of any other book that helps bring the Gospel to bear on practical everyday Christian growth in a simple, powerful way!
